The Senior school Librarian will have the overall responsibility for managing the library on a day to day basis which includes having to manage resources, prepare and manage budgets, teach digital literary and information skills to students and implement the annual Library plan. In addition, the librarian will support the library programs and the activities and help create a strong reading and research culture in the school.
The Senior Librarian will lead the library team comprising of the Librarian (technical and administrative) and the Library attendants. He/she will report directly to the HOS/ Principal and will work in close consultation with the Library Consultant, LAC and library staff to ensure that the library moves towards its stated goals. He/ she should ensure that everyone who works in the school library should contribute towards the library culture in a positive manner.
Essential Qualifications:
Undergraduate Degree in any discipline (preferably Education/ English Literature/ Journalism) + M.Lib.Sc.. Should have computer proficiency in use of Lib Sys and experience of working with DDC and Sears List of Subject Headings. Good communication skills and experience in library management skills are an essential.
Responsibilities:
Administrative:
- To oversee the overall development and upkeep of the library space, services and programs on a day to day basis.
- To implement the effective running of the library in accordance with the Library Operations and Policy manual.
- To assist in the selection and training of library staff and to assign clear duties and responsibilities to the Assistant Librarian and Library Attendants and monitor their work.
- To organize all learning and teaching materials within the school library to facilitate their accessibility, location and use.
- To oversee the proper acquisition, cataloguing and classification of library materials.
- To maintain records of library information such as vendor contact details, latest catalogues etc.
- To maintain all files and databases regarding recommendations, requisitions, purchases, invoices and other related documents
- To coordinate Library Action Committee (LAC) meetings.
- To work with the LAC to implement the Annual Library Activity Plan ( ALAC) including budgets, annual calendar of events,
programs etc. and to submit a term report on the implementation of the ALAP to the LAC.
- To compile, analyze and submit the Library Annual Report outlining the performance and productivity of each section of the library.
This should reflect data on resources availability, resource usage patterns, etc. The report needs to compiled and submitted to the LAC every year.
- To conduct the annual Library User Survey for feedback on the functioning of the library and to share the survey findings with the LAC.
- To remain updated about new learning resources, maintain contact with publishers and booksellers etc.
- To liaise with outside agencies and information networks and encourage their use by the school community and thereby extend the range of resources available in
the school library.
Academic:
- To conduct the Library orientation and user education programs (know your library, how to find your book, internet search strategies, library tour, etc).
Separate sessions for students (under the information literacy curriculum) and staff members.
- To instruct and assist students and teachers in the proper use of library resources.
- To develop a strong library program focused on digital and and information literacy.
- To support a strong reading program in the library that introduces children to a range of genres and writers and builds skills in reading,
maintaining reading journals, giving book talks, writing book reviews etc.
- To coordinate the library events and activities such as Book Week, Book club and Student Librarians Volunteers group etc.
- To prepare relevant library promotional materials, bulletin boards and displays in the library on a monthly basis.
- To compile grade specific graded reading lists and subject/ thematic bibliographies.
- To help teachers and curriculum leads to identify appropriate teaching/ learning resources.
- To facilitate and participate in the planning of activities connected to the use of library space and resources by curriculum leads and teachers.
- To communicate any news related to new acquisitions, the literary world and library happenings with the members via the library page on the school website.
Technical:
- To maintain records of library information such as vendor contact details, latest catalogues etc.
- To maintain all files and databases regarding recommendations, requisitions, purchases, invoices and other related documents
- To be responsible for the entire resource procumbent process, cross checking deliveries with orders and invoices and follow ups.
- To be responsible for all technical processes in the library such as accession, classification, cataloguing , processing etc
- To ensure the maintenance of the library collection in pristine condition with correct categorization and shelving.
- To manage all library subscriptions for print and digital resources.
- To assist in the identification and updates of appropriate library software in the library.
- To maintain a spreadsheet for recording expenditure for budgetary purposes. He/ she needs to maintain a separate sheet for all budget categories such as CBSE,
IGCSE or IB as well as separate sheets for separate accounts of sub categories.
- To assist library members to access appropriate materials
- To be responsible for all other circulation related matters including keeping track of on-line services and manage book reservations, requests etc.
- To assist the teachers in all learning programs and activities that take place in the library.
- To do the annual stocktaking.
- To coordinate the annual weeding out/deselection/cancellation of unwanted, outdated, less used books and the discard process.
- To oversee the regular repair/ mending/ binding of books.
- To be responsible for all resources received against approval in the library.
- To generate various library data and reports as required by Library Consultant.
