Junior

Step by Step Junior school provides each child the chance to discover her strengths and learn within a caring, stimulating and supportive environment. The school seeks to deliver an experience that has at its heart our mission of using education as the strongest force to respect people and cultures for peace, understanding and   a sustainable future.

It equips its students socially, academically, philosophically and morally for their journey through life. SBS believes in educating the ‘whole self’ and not just teaching the curriculum to its students. It pledges to meet the needs of the individual child, nurture her unique learning style and help her acquire skills and knowledge to enjoy a lifetime of discovery and learning.

The learner-centered environment at school acts as a great teacher. It informs and engages the viewer. Classroom interiors have aesthetic displays of project work and are interspersed with arrays of interesting objects collected by the children and learning material. There are clearly designated spaces for large and small-group activities.

A challenging curriculum, extensive community service, a well- developed leadership program and a variety of co-curricular activities are all hallmarks of the kind of education we offer at SBS.

We would like each and every student to grow into a thinking individual, capable of taking responsibility for the choices and decisions she makes as that would determine the quality of life she would lead in future. Step by Step Junior school provides each child the chance to discover her strengths and learn within a caring, stimulating and supportive environment. The school seeks to deliver an experience that has at its heart our mission of using education as the strongest force to respect people and cultures for peace, understanding and   a sustainable future.

Teaching of Science in Junior School

Teaching and learning Science is an exciting experience at Step by Step School. We follow a hands-on enquiry based approach for teaching Science. Our motto is ‘learning by doing’. The focus is focus on giving our students the required skills and not on content delivery. The main objective is to develop curiosity, interest and enjoyment towards science and its methods of inquiry.

SBS wants its students to be reflective thinkers. We want them to handle a problem scientifically. Our student will sense a problem, define it, collect evidence, organize and interpret the data, formulate the hypothesis, test its validity and finally draw conclusions. This training in the scientific method is one of the most important objectives of teaching science in SBS.

Teaching of Mathematics in Junior School

Our teaching of Mathematics is based on Modern Mathematics – the methodology and approach. The main aim is to remove the fear of Mathematics by changing the way we teach in class. We in SBS believe that there is a need to get away from thinking of mathematics just as a collection of rules for addition, subtraction and other operations or an array of formulae and start seeing it as a way of thinking, modelling and reasoning about the reality. We have enhanced our Math Curriculum by introducing JODOGYAN teaching materials and manipulatives. This has helped strengthen children’s number sense.

Teaching of Languages in Junior School

The primary goal of the Junior School language curriculum both Hindi and English is to empower students to communicate confidently and dynamically both orally and in writing, read for pleasure and literary appreciation, and learn new information. To fulfil these goals, teachers focus on reading skills that include phonemic awareness, decoding, vocabulary development, fluency, and comprehension. Students in Grades III-V are exposed to Novel study. It paves a way for students to engage in critical thinking and reflection as they read, discuss, and respond to books. Collaboration is at the core of this approach. Readers add onto their understanding as they construct meaning with other readers. It further guides readers to deeper understanding of what they read through structured discussion and extended written and artistic response. Ample opportunity is provided to every student to hone her skills of articulation and practice different types of writing. Students are provided with clear success criteria for each writing style, as well as formative feedback.

Social Studies Curriculum

Social Studies in the Junior School deals with the interaction of people within a physical, political, cultural and social environment. The curriculum aims to develop attitudes which promote responsible citizenship and an appreciation of our culture, tradition, and heritage. Learning experiences provide children with opportunities to develop an interest and curiosity about the world, respect and care for the environment and value and respect similarities and differences between people. The focus of the curriculum is to help children make informed and rational choices as young citizen of a culturally diverse, democratic nation.

Due attention is given to the development of skill, disposition and knowledge through the varied experiences that a child is exposed to. Processes and skills of problem-solving, decision-making, interpreting maps and globes, and locating, acquiring, organizing, and evaluating information is emphasized upon. The introduction of significant and appropriate current events is an integral part of the curriculum at this level.

VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS IN JUNIOR SCHOOL

At Step by Step junior School, Art as a subject is recommended at all stages. It covers all four major spheres, i.e. music, dance, visual arts and theatre. The emphasis is on interactive approach and not instruction. This is because the goal of art education is to promote aesthetic and personal awareness and the ability to express oneself in different forms. The importance of India’s heritage crafts, both in terms of their economic and aesthetic values, should be recognized as being relevant to school education.

Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils. It should equip them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As children progress from Pre- school to Primary and then to Middle and Senior school, they learn to think critically and develop a fine understanding of art and design. They will learn how art, crafts and design, reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creative wealth of our nation.

By the end of junior school, we are happy to see our students exploring their ideas through a variety of art forms. They are proficient in sketching, drawing, painting and sculpture. They know about great masters, craftsmen and folk artists, and get several opportunities to meet and interact with them.
