Languages
The principal aim of the Language Faculty is to fully develop the students' ability to understand, enjoy and use language through speaking, listening, reading, writing and the explicit study of language skills. Children are taught the features and purposes of literary and non-literary writing, such as media and moving image texts, and oral communication. Through a range of differentiated learning and teaching strategies, we enable students to make progress at a suitable pace. Authors, poets and dramatists are often invited to conduct talks and workshops. Other activities include theatre trips, literary and journalism clubs, elocution, debates and class plays.
Students are taught skills to communicate in at least two languages. The medium of instruction is English with Hindi as the compulsory language that is taught till class 8. A third language is introduced in class 6 in keeping with the three-language policy of the government. We offer Sanskrit, French and Spanish as options for the third language. Students who take the CBSE stream have a choice of continuing with the language till class 10.
At the IGCSE/IBDP level, students’ understanding of another culture is enhanced through the study of a second language. The primary emphasis of the modern language courses is on language acquisition and its use in a range of contexts and for different purposes.
Mathematics
The Mathematics faculty helps students develop confidence in the use of mathematical concepts and skills, which will enable them to cope with the practical, mathematical demands of everyday life. We aim to project mathematics as a positive and enjoyable experience as well as an essential part of the curriculum. Students learn to work systematically, both independently and within groups, using imagination, initiative and flexibility of mind. These aims are met at four levels:
The IGCSE curriculum offers Mathematics both at the core and extended level. It also offers Advanced Math.
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program offers different levels in Mathematics:
IBDP 2020 Batch
IBDP 2021 Batch
Sciences
The Science Faculty encourages students to be curious, to question, to investigate, to formulate hypotheses, design and carry out experiments, make observations and record results.
For the younger children, our curriculum concentrates on the following areas:
In the CBSE curriculum, Science is taught as a composite discipline up to class 9 and 10 and organised around potentially cross-disciplinary themes. Abstraction and quantitative reasoning occupy a central place in the teaching-learning process. In classes 11 and 12, we offer Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as electives. At the IGCSE level, along with Biology, Physics and Chemistry, students are also offered Environmental Management as a choice.
In the IB curriculum, we offer experimental Sciences as a subject in group four and students need to study one subject from this group. The subjects available include Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Environmental Systems and Societies. Each subject contains a body of knowledge together with scientific methods, and students develop an ability to analyse, evaluate and synthesise scientific information. Our laboratories are well-equipped for all the Sciences, reflecting the latest in research and development and are at the cutting edge of technology.
Humanities
A study of the Humanities aims to better prepare students for the economic, political, social and environmental challenges of our world. Our Humanities faculty prides itself on its innovative and dynamic curriculum. We encourage our students to explore, understand and evaluate the social, political, economic and environmental dimensions of the world, and formulate and justify arguments in response to a diverse range of issues.
Students can feel confident that a study in Humanities will enable them to assert their place as active and informed citizens in tomorrow’s world. Our programmes provide a challenging and stimulating learning environment for our students. Curricula are deliberately structured to provide directed learning pathways that prepare them for their senior studies. The Social Science curriculum includes a study of the following:
In the CBSE Class 11 and 12, in addition to all of the above, subjects like Accountancy, Business Studies, Entrepreneurship and Psychology are also offered as electives.
The International Baccalaureate Diploma programme has a section of group three subjects titled Individuals and Societies. A selection of the following subjects is offered as part of the IB Diploma program.
Technology
Whether it is a class 3 student creating a newsletter with MS Word or a class 8 student creating a website, technology permeates all facets of student life at our school. At the primary and junior level, technology education is integrated with the curriculum to make it a seamless learning experience. At the middle school, learning is more structured and formalised to enhance students’ cross-curricular application skills. At the IGCSE level, we offer students a choice of taking ICT or Computer Science as one of the examination papers. In CBSE classes 11 and 12, students are offered Informatics Practices and Computer Science as electives.
Performing Arts
The Performing Arts offer unparalleled opportunities for the development of the imagination, sensitivity and inventiveness-all essential elements in a balanced curriculum. For those with high levels of skill and a suitable temperament, this can lead to employment in the arts. The arts not only supply the foundation for varied, enriching leisure pursuits but enable students to develop their powers of creativity alongside interpersonal skills needed for everyday life.
The curriculum provides a means for personal expression, inspires participation in practical work, develops social skills through creative teamwork and broadens attitudes towards the arts. Students participate in a range of productions, the study of musical instruments and musical ensembles. Main concerts are held annually along with regular music and drama assemblies. There is also a commitment to student-led activity, both regarding performances and the running of activities.
Visual Arts
The Visual Arts programme is a carefully planned arts curriculum that promotes intellectual, aesthetic and emotional growth. It is designed for all students and specifically those seniors who wish to pursue a structured course of study. Students take classes in drawing, graphics, colour theory, two-dimensional design, sculpture, ceramics and photography, as well as survey classes in art history, tracing visual arts from prehistory to contemporary philosophies.
Assignments are designed to introduce the student to a variety of media and the nature of the creative process and art objects. The Visual Arts faculty also stresses the importance of the academic programme as an integral part of each student's education. The programme develops and encourages each student to extend his or her abilities and interests. So, playdoh and clay lead to potter’s wheels and eventually, in senior school–ceramics and studio pottery. For others, the route might take them from crayons and paint to computer-aided graphics and animation.
Art is also offered as an elective subject in classes 11 and 12 CBSE and in the IGCSE and IB curricula.
Physical Education
Physical Education at SBS is designed to encourage the natural interest of most children in developing their own various physical skills. We seek to provide enjoyment through participation in a physical sport and activity, and experience the stimulation of competition. Every effort is made to ensure that children understand and are aware of the essential part that exercise plays in maintaining a healthy body, and to develop in children a determination to overcome the difficulties of mastering specific skills and movements. Children are given the opportunity to experience a variety of physical educational opportunities within the school hall, playground, sports field, tennis and basketball courts, and swimming pool.
Our children are encouraged to participate in activities as individuals, with partners or as members of a group, and to appreciate the importance of fair play, and of working to a set of rules in order to gain most benefit and enjoyment from the activity. In this way we seek to teach children to cope responsibly with both success and failure, and to value the contribution of others. We allow children to compete and collaborate with children from other schools whenever possible, and we attempt to lay sound foundations for developing interests and skills after leaving the school.
We have one of the most comprehensive after-school PE programmes in Delhi. We are running after school coaching in Cricket, Basketball (separate boys and girls), Football (separate for boys and girls), Badminton, Tennis, and Swimming. All subjects for five days every week. We organise Football, Basketball, and Kwik Cricket Leagues, as well as school and house matches, and we take part in the full range of district tournaments. Our basketball league is uniquely recognized as a genuine grassroots initiative by the Basketball Federation of India.
